Standoff ends in Tuftonboro; suspect in custody
A suspect is now in custody without incident after a standoff in Tuftonboro Tuesday. A section of Route 171 was temporarily closed after a man fired a gun at a sheriff’s deputy, sources told WMUR.Sources said that just after 11 a.m. Tuesday, a Carroll County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a vehicle that had left Carroll County Superior Court. Police said the man was known to that deputy.The man fired at the deputy on Canaan Road, sources said. The deputy was not injured.The man was believed to be barricaded inside his home for hours. “We saw what you see right here. Three cop cars come out. Four go back in. A couple come out. More go back in,” neighbor Mike Stefanilo said.The suspect was eventually taken into custody just before 8 p.m.People who live in the area were shocked to see this type of ordeal play out on their street, but say they are relieved it all came to a peaceful end. “I think it’s unreal. This is the quiet, nice neighborhood. I mean even people in Tuftonboro don’t know where this is,” neighbor Linda Barrowclough said.Route 171 reopened just before 3 p.m.The circumstances surrounding what led up to the event, including the discharge of weapons, are under investigation.The Carroll County sheriff’s office, New Hampshire State Police and several other law enforcement agencies were assisting at the scene. A state police helicopter also flew overhead. The suspect’s identity has not been released. It’s also unclear as to what charges he may be facing. Police are asking anyone with additional information to call (603) 223-8928.
